Welcome to the first sign of Sign Sayz. I'm the $ign, dollar or money sign to be exact, but you guessed that right? Well, here at Sign Sayz, I will be giving rants, reviews, stories, etc. But now, time for our first rant and one that I've been dying to get my hands on.
One of my most favorite anime that I've ever seen has to be Death Note. It was well planned, the characters (well most of them) were well developed and had their quirks, changes, and made you think; who was the antagonist and who was the protagonist, and whether your choosing of the antagonist has an ideal view on the world/justice system. Wait, you've never seen Death note though? Well, let's take a trip down memory lane (but the anime is about five years old or whatever.)
Light Yagami, a bored genius, finds a lone notebook by his school, entitled Death Note. This special notebook, not only dropped by an equally bored God of death [Shinigami], has the power to kill any person whose name is written in the Death note with their face (and name) in the author's mind by means of a heart attack. Thinking this is an elaborate hoax, Light plays it off as nothing. Taking more time than he should on a hoax, he happens to turn on the news too see a robber holding a kindergarten class hostage. Light just writes his name in the Death Note and finds out that it's not a prank, it's for real. That's also confirmed by seeing the shinigami [who would resemble the Joker if he was dead for 100 years, but grew skin] Ryuk.
Light takes it upon himself to rid the world of all criminals and make a peaceful world where good people, like himself, live. He does this by going under the name, Kira [killer in english] However, this is still murder and it gets the attention that criminals are dropping like flies, but no evidence is found. A true case needs a great warrior: Enter L. Yes, L. An alias, and also a world class detective who never shows his face or voice for that matter [a voice disorter solves that problem]. He is proclaimed the world's greatest detective [sorry Batman] and makes up a vow to catch Kira. It's a game of cat and mouse to for both parties to find out the other person's name and face. Whoever is found out -- will die. [Murder = Death pentalty for Light]. Bottom line, I reccomend Death Note. 'Tis great.
---------------
Movie!:: Ya know, they made a movie of Death Note right? In 2006, four years ago actually called "Death Note: The last name". It was Japanese and it wasn't really that bad, pretty good actually. One of the best adaptions I've seen for an anime or anything for that matter! The acting was good [kudos to Kenichi Matsuyama, he really captured the essence of L], Ryuk and Rem's animation felt alright, the plot stuck to the movie. Everything was good, after all Death Note is really a murder mystery with some CGI thrown in and some thinking in the original manga. It's not like they're throwing beams out of their hands and turning into giant apes. That would just be weird @_@. I would give the movie a 4/5. But, what irks me to no end is the fact that America and all of it's now-slow brained, no thinking, movie producers in Hollywood is doing an American remake of Death Note!!! WHY?
--------------------
Thoughts::: If the anime was about four years ago, that's not even that long ago, why in the hell would we need a remake? What's America's purpose of making Death Note, if the Japanese version was so good and it was recently released? Money, and this is the only time where $$ money is the enemy, but damn! I may be a little edgy and I have all reason to. I don't have to go down the list of bad anime adaptions that America produced. Just one: Just one little pimple on the face of anime adaption: Dragon ball evolution. But that's a time for another Sign Sayz.
Rumors around the net has speculated that Zac Efron, singing, dancing, High school musical, Zac Efron was going to play Light Yagami. Now, how does that sound? That's like putting George Clooney in the batsuit... oops. Now, Zac may look like Light, yeah no doubt that he does but that's beside the point. The guy is now typecasted as the teen/tween girl denominator and it's hard to see him go from High school musical, to god of a new world. Besides, how pathetic can you get to have somebody as known and hated as well as adored in Hollywood than Zac Efron? If he sucked in H.S.M, then I'm sure that my favorite anime has no chance in hell... oh, I'm sorry M.U [nothingness]. Zac said he was fan of the series, and I'm guessing that's OK since he would know what the character is like and it sheds a whole new light. As Will Smith overhauled his persona in Hancock, Jim Carey settled down a bit in Fun with Dick and Jane, and Heath Ledger, the 'gay cowboy' as some of you said in '06, did a tremendous performance in Dark Knight, maybe Zac Efron can pull a huge turn around.
My fears:: I have a lot of fears for the American Death Note. First things first: Let's stick with the story. If they want to change up the names to American-ize it, well go ahead since a name is a name. However, don't make it sound too bad and let's keep ordinary names like Light, L, and Misa. Well, Misa can be a nickname I guess. But going back with the story, nothing needs to be tweaked except the ending. Will they follow the manga, anime, or end it with their own twist? Case point, a main character needs to die and I think we all know which one needs to get the axe. My other fear is that dedicated fans of Efron will try and see this movie and their soccermoms will let them, not knowing what the hell it's about. I would hate to see a 10-year-old say "I'm going to write your name in my death note!" as a threat. That's a facepalm and disrespect as a human being and a fan of Death Note. Another thing: Make it R. Make it R, R, R, R, R, R, R, R, R, R. Lastly, I don't want this film to suck. That's all I'm asking. I have a feeling it won't beat Avatar, but at least give it a run for it's money. Pass Alvin and the Chipmunks at that.
So, see you hundred dollar biller$ again next time! ^_^
